green hornet smoothie.

I have been relying on smoothies more than ever this summer, so that would explain why there are so many smoothie recipes on here lately. I’m also trying to make more with coconut water as a base instead of almond milk because before or after a work out I feel so refreshed. Also I’m trying to try to find more that use a little more vegetables, instead of so much fruit.

Earlier this summer we were in Madison, Wisconsin and stopped at Collectivo Coffee during their epic farmers market. They had one dairy free smoothie, the green hornet, so I ordered it and it was delicious. So delicious that Milo took it over, and I had to go order another one.  I wrote down what listed in it and have been making it myself. Its the perfect summer smoothie. So refreshing!

1 cup coconut water
3-4 pinapple chunks
small chunk of cucumber (about 1/4 of a cucumber or so)
1/2 green apple
1-2 stalks celery
Handful of spinach
2-3 Kale leaves
optional: hemp seeds, flax seeds, maca powder

Blend and enjoy.

the best beet smoothie.

This year the beets in my garden turned out pretty small  – i think i planted them too close together; but that means they are smoothie sized! This one is pretty darn good!

1 cup coconut water
1 small beet, chopped
4-5 cubes frozen pineapple
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 orange, peeled
1 small apple, cored
handful or two of spinach (or kale)
1 tablespoon hemp seeds (optional)
1 tablespoon maca powder (optional)
Squirt of honey or agave (optional)

blend and enjoy! Add more water if its too thick. This made two smoothies.

bananaberry smoothie.

My ultimate go-to-i-cant-get-enough-of-you-smoothie right now.

1 cup almond milk
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup or so of frozen berries
1 tspn peanut butter
hemp seeds
Flax seeds

peach oatmeal smoothie.

This has been my go-to smoothie this summer. It’s the best with those big juicy peaches you find at the farmers market. I tried subbing frozen peaches, but it just wasn’t the same. You definitely want to use fresh here. Its definitely a sweet, delicious way to start your morning.

1 frozen banana
1 – 1 1/2 cups almond milk
1 fresh, ripe peach
1 T flax seed
2 -3 T dried oatmeal

Blend and ejoy!

incredible hulk smoothie.

hulkMy friend anna posted a recipe similar to this on instagram recently, and due to a large amount of avocados laying around my house, I knew I needed to try it out.  That was four days ago – so needless to say, I’m hooked. The addition of the avocado makes it so smooth and creamy. I love it.

I call it the incredible hulk smoothie, for obvious reasons – and it makes it fun when I serve it up to milo, who drinks it without even flinching.  Im sure there are alot of ways to mix this up – i think the addition of mango might even be nice!

Put in your blender:
1- 1 1/2 cups almond milk
1/4 of an avocado (more if you want a more creamier texture)
1 frozen banana1 small apple

Mix in your blender and serve immediately.

500th post! chai smoothie.

So this is my 500th post on this blog! Hard to believe it!  That sounds pretty crazy!! I wish I had something a little more exciting than a smoothie to share with you for this milestone, but I was traveling this weekend. But I can promise you this is a delicious smoothie and it definitely helped me turn my ordinary daily smoothie into something a little more extraordinary!

I love chai tea, but I tend to stay away from it because it has caffeine. I found some decaffinated kind recently, from tazo, and I’ve been drinking it like its going out of style. Vega makes a chai protein powder that I sometimes use in my smoothie, and its pretty good, buuuuut it still tastes like a protein powder.

This is a great way to mix up my daily smoothie and bring the spicy-ness of a chai tea. You can make the chia mix ahead of time and store it in a little jar for when you need it.

chai spice blend
2 tsp ground cardamom
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground allspice

3/4 cup almond milk, or any other nut milk
1/4 cup coconut milk (this will make it kind of creamy – you can just do one cup almond milk if you dont have any coconut milk)
1 frozen banana
1 heaping spoonful almond butter (or peanut butter)
1-2 tsp chai spice1/2 tsp maca powder
1 tbsp flax seed

*additions – adding an apple and/or some oatmeal would really help make this a power-packed winner!

apple cinnamon almond oatmeal shake.

Just taking note of a great breakfast shake!

Put in the vitamix (or powerful blender)
6 raw almonds
1 apple
1 frozen banana1 cup almond milk
3 T oatmeal
dash of cinnamon

spinach, grape, banana & peach smoothie.

Now that I’m back from china – (update on granny stripe blanket coming soon!)  I’ve been trying to get back in the groove of eating regular food. However, I’ve been looking for a twist on the everyday things that I have been finding myself gravitating towards. I had a chance to finally grocery shop last night and the majority of my $100 bill was produce! I’m ready for healthy food again!

I started this morning with a delicious new smoothie!

I used about 2 cups of baby spinach, handful of frozen peaches, two handfuls of purple grapes, and a frozen banana. I added 1 cup of chilled water, and put it in the vitamix. SO GOOD! It made plenty too, so I was able to share (although I could have drank the whole thing by myself easily!!)

cold fighting smoothie.

Its like the plague has hit our home. First, pink eye struck. Then a bad cold I’ve been fighting for over a week. Then 103 degree fevers and a trip to ER for milo…. Now my husband is sick. Its been a LOOOONG week. and my cold is still lingering!

I made up this smoothie to help us get some vitamin c in our bodies first thing in the morning. It may not actually “fight” a cold – but I wanted something nourishing and fresh in our bodies to start the day since we haven’t been eating much real food otherwise. It definitely tastes good!

1/2 cup almond milk
1 orange
1 cup frozen strawberries
1 handful spinach/and or kale
Squirt of honey

Mix it in a blender and drink away!

peanut butter & jelly smoothie.

1 frozen banana
handful or so of frozen blueberries
1 tspn flax
1 T peanut butter
3 dates

Blend and enjoy…Delicious, right?!
